No-Recipe Cantaloupe Salad

Salt, sour, sweet—summer's over

Hello My Little Melon Seeds!

It was a misty and drippy day here in Brooklyn, much too dreary to be inside. I took my melon salad set-up out to the deck and did today’s live demo al fresco.

Are there four ingredients in this salad, including salt? Yes.

Did I find lots of other things to discuss? Also yes.

Topics include:

  • how to choose a ripe melon

  • how to shop for produce like a food stylist

  • the mise en place container I want to be buried with/in

  • various cute shapes for cutting melons

  • how melon ballers can cure depression

  • the sweetest spot on every melon

  • all the Spin Its for lime juice

  • all the Spin Its for honey

  • all the herbs that would taste good in this salad

  • my favorite citrus squeezer

  • what purple shiso tastes like

  • irrefutable facts that prove summer is over

  • how it’s possible that I already have seasonal affective disorder

  • why my fitness coach had to talk sternly to me this morning

We concluded with a soaring panoramic view of my tiny backyard and my beloved wood-burning oven, which led to a final note of optimism from me:

  • The one good thing about summer being over (see above) is that we can light fires and cook outside without perishing from heat stroke.

Hope it’s sunny where you are!
