Hello!
Fun day, today. I’m launching my first ever month-long workshop here on Substack!
Recipe Development for the Digital Age (RDDA?? Should have considered initials sooner!) is a 4-week course to kick-start your recipe creation process. By the end of the course, you’ll have the tools, confidence, inspiration and support to concept, develop, troubleshoot, film, and publish your recipes on any platform.
Why Am I Doing This?
Working alongside other cooks every day was the richest learning environment of my career. I miss those times! It’s hard to find inspiration and guidance on your own. I want to spark that camaraderie here, and help you find your recipe style and your audience.
This workshop is designed to feel like being in a test kitchen surrounded by other cooks. I’ve cleared the decks for March so that I can give you my personal attention and feedback (daily).
Format and Structure
Four weeks, four themes. We’ll start with some of the technical aspects of recipe writing and all the choices you have when it comes to how your recipes could look on the page/screen.
Then we’ll delve into the nitty gritty of the development process: where to start and what to do when things aren’t working right. We’ll also talk about recipe voice and cross-testing, and there will be lots of ways that subscribers can help each other solve problems.
Finally we’ll talk about packaging and promoting your content so it sounds and feels like you, and also inspires your audience.
Each week is anchored by a live (online) panel on Mondays (more on that, below). Every day, I’ll post daily prompts, simple assignments, and inspiration tied to the theme of the week. My goal is to motivate your creative energy. That might mean helping you come up with dish ideas if you’re not sure where to start, or dialing in an approach to a recipe you know you want to work on. We’ll also use community chats to get support and feedback from the larger community—a digital test kitchen filled with other cooks!
On Fridays from 12pm to 2pm ET, I’ll host an AMA to give feedback on any issues that came up during the week, review your recipe images, coach you through sticking points, and basically just be there for you. If you can’t make it during that timeframe, you can ALWAYS drop your question into chat and I’ll see it there, or message me directly.
We take the weekend to recharge (and eat all the leftovers in the fridge!), and hit it again when Monday rolls back around.
The Panels
Panels take place on Mondays from 7pm to 8:30pm ET. I’ll host alongside one or more creators and experts to discuss key ideas and field your questions. The panels will be on Zoom and Live Recordings will be uploaded the next day, so you can watch whenever and as many times as you want.
How to Sign Up
The workshop is hubbed and hosted on Substack. The best and most cost-effective way to take part is to subscribe to Food Processing at the Super Workshopper tier. That gets you into all 4 panels and unlocks the full breadth of offerings for community engagement. You also receive an annual membership for the other 11 months! I’ll also publish and promote at least one original recipe created by one of you.
If you were a Founding Member, you are now a Super Workshopper, and you don’t have to do anything! You’ve got it all. Thank you!
If you’re a monthly or annual subscriber, you can easily upgrade your membership. Here’s how to do that.
If you are at the monthly or annual paid tier, there will be tons of cool stuff happening every day that you can get a plenty of value from.
If you’re a paying monthly or annual subscriber and the panels aren’t your thing, you’ll still be able to read posts and participate in all the community threads. Or, ignore it—all my regular recipe content will publish as usual while the workshop is going on.
If you want to participate but money is tight, send an email to kitchen@carlalallimusic and we’ll figure it out.
Please let me know if you have questions! I’m here and I can’t wait for this!
Inspired by this and can't wait! Thank you Carla, I appreciate the energy you are bringing to this and to sharing your talent and creativity with us!
Love this! Just signed up, can’t wait.
